A few more images of some of the ancient and very strange Oaks to be found within Sherwood Forest.
The first is an interesting one, some of these ancient trees are being maintained to a greater or lesser extent by the people who run the park. the Major Oak is upheld (somewhat) by scaffolding and this old chap is being held together by a metal belt or two.
I have no idea of whether or not J.R.R Tolkien had ever visited Sherwood and its Oaks, but he must have had ancient trees like these in mind when he came up with his Ents.
And lastly, not an Oak…but a young fern with ambitions!
